We make the six -hour trip back to mainland Greece on the 28th of August and pile into a tiny car that we have hired. It seems that car-hire is more economical than the bus for the five of us and as we are arriving at 3pm, much easier.

We drive to Delphi, the ancient site of the famed Delphi Oracle and spend two nights in a small local hotel.

There is something about Delphi, it is even suggested in the guide books that there is a special energy about the place. After all, Zeus launched two eagles from the two ends of the world, and the eagles, starting simultaneously and flying at equal speed, crossed their paths above the area of Delphi. From this point, Zeus threw a stone from the sky to see where it would fall. The stone fell at Delphi, which since then was considered to be the centre of the world, the omphalos – “navel of the earth”.

This is right up Roger’s alley!
Delphi seems to be up about 1000 other people’s alleys too, as the place is packed. The entire site climbs steadily up a hill, culminating in the Stadium at the top where the four-yearly Pythian Games were held.

Next stop is Zakynthos, an Island off the Italian side of Mainland Greece.
